I grew up in a culturally conservative family in Vancouver. There was a lot of passive homophobia growing up. My parents would refer to our version of the village as “where all the addicts lived.” My first feeling of being unsafe was within my own family—this feeling of ostracization.
There is a feeling of insecurity in the gay online world. There is discrimination, there is an openness about saying awful things. It can bring out the truth in people. When you come across someone with a profile with that kind of exclusionary language, it makes you feel a certain way. It impacts you.
