I am very comfortable with who I am. I live in the Jane and Finch area which is mostly made up of my own people—my own colour, my own background, and yet they make me uncomfortable because of who I am. I lived at Weston Road and Lawrence, and I’m not going to change who I am or the way I dress. I think that everyone who saw me knew that I was gay. I had to walk with that sense of “you can be hurt at any time,” so it made me more alert. I did the self-protection kind of thing. It was a constant high alert, knowing where I was.
