There has been a clear increase in hate crimes and other assaults against our community - particularly those that are racialized. This project shares the stories of 24 brave community members who have faced these challenges. Along with our partners, we aim to raise awareness about safety in the neighbourhoods we call home. We ask you to show your support by participating in our campaign - #UntilWereSafe.
If we are to create a culture and climate where everyone in our community can feel safe, it is critical that we improve information exchange between agencies and raise awareness about the resources available to support people that have been affected by violent crime.
There has been a long history of violence targeted at the LGBTQ2S+ community. Whether interpersonal, opportunistic or systemic hate crime, it’s clear the problem is growing.
We have traditionally created the resources we need to remain safe when traditional measures of security have not been adequate or responsive to our needs. #UntilWereSafe is one way we’re coming together to show support for each other and draw attention to the ongoing issues of safety and visibility affecting our community.
Our experiences may be diverse but we share a simple truth—we deserve to be safe. Each of the unique stories shared on this site let others know that they are not alone. We will support each other with compassion and courage. We encourage you to share your own stories using #UntilWereSafe and to show solidarity with our Facebook frame.
We are honoured that these brave folks have shared their experiences highlighting some of the challenges facing our community. They demonstrate the necessity of continuing to watch out for another, while also letting those in need of services know where to go.
